2018 Fall Trend Report

August 20, 2018

As I mentioned in my last post, we are now approaching the home stretch of summer! Brands and retailers are launching their fall inventories, and summer sales are starting to occur. With the anticipation of fall fashions in the air there is no better time to start thinking about the trends we will soon be seeing everywhere. If you want to get a sneak peak into what fall fashion will be all about then keep reading!

Patchwork, Quilts, and Traditional American Prints

Designers are paying homage to American history this season by having traditional American prints, patchwork, and quilts as major design details and patterns in their ready-to-wear collections. With drawn out quilts dragging down runways and cowboy boots becoming essential to a wardrobe, it makes sense to start wearing head-to-toe American!

Whimsical Prairie Dresses

I don’t think there’s a single person who loves fashion and hasn’t heard of the brand LoveShackFancy. But incase you haven’t, let me give you a quick summary of what the brand is about.

“Ranging from French countryside eyelet to the creamy shades of Swedish cottages to Victorian-inspired lace, the brand offers versatile pieces that evoke an imperfect elegance and old-world eclecticism. LoveShackFancy is made for a woman who is unabashedly feminine, ethereal, whimsical and enchanted by history and vintage style.”

Sounds pretty great, right? It will come as no surprise when whimsical prairie dresses become a trend everyone wants to be wearing, even in the fall!

Big Shoulders and Black Leather

The 80’s has been trending in pop-culture this year, so it comes as no surprise that the signature styles of the decade appeared across runway collections for the fall. The motto for this season is the bigger the better. Big shoulders and black leather are fashion details that emphasis glam women power. Since leather is also a great material to show off a woman’s silhouette, it makes a great contrast to the big shoulders.

Sparkle and Shine

That’s right, cool futuristic silver is the metallic to shine in. For Balmain creative director, Olivier Rousteing, this season is all about dressing head-to-toe in breathable, lightweight glamour. And courtesy to Givenchy’s swish silver beading, there are reminiscents of the old-fashioned 1930’s movie star glamour, a particular favorite of mine. Metallics and shine don’t just have to be about elegant ensembles, however. Light, silver bomber jackets will do the trick and are perfect for fall.

Monochromatic Looks of White

So we’ve seen monochromatic looks of sparkle and shine, and neon power suits before, but what about white? Although white is more commonly associated with summer, there is nothing more refreshing than a head-to-toe look of this clean, sharp, minimalistic colour in the fall. Pair a white pencil-midi skirt and a ruffle blouse and you’ve got yourself the perfect look!

Faux Fur

Ever since Italian luxury brand Gucci announced earlier this year they were no longer going to be using fur in their clothing, other designers started following in their footsteps. With multiple layers and oversized outerwear the style of choice this fall, faux fur is the perfect way to be a part of the trend – and be ethical as well! It’s equally soft and as comfortable as real fur. It will also allow you to have the timeless quality of fur in your style.

Animal Prints

Before you roll your eyes and think, “animal prints, again?,” you should see the bold changes designers have made to a classic idea. Aside from the cheetah prints we’ve seen in past collections, designers have incorporated bold tiger stripes, white snow leopard designs, and faux snake and crocodile skins into their collections. 2018 has been the year of breaking boundaries by rediscovering the past. Designers have taken the trends from the past and reinvented them to make the trends of the future.

Plaid

Here is another trend that comes as no surprise! This year designers are sporting a trendy variation on the traditional plaid by combining patterns of different sizes and different shades from the same colour family. If you want to make an even bigger statement, mix materials such as faux leather and satin.

Hot Pink

Light shades of rose and baby pink have been long time fashions staples. Designers are taking a different route this season moving onto bolder and brighter fuschia! Fuschia is unlike any other shade of pink and it’s the perfect colour to mix and match with existing items in your wardrobe. It can be worn as a long statement jacket or as a pair of kitten heels. Fuschia is one of those remarkable colours that works on everyone.

Graphic Stripes

Stripes are a pattern, that at one time or another, everyone has fallen for. This season, styles are shifting towards bigger, bolder, and more graphic designs. Colourful stripes paired on top of daytime silhouettes is one of the more striking trends of the season. Designers Diane von Fürstenberg and Tanya Taylor have created collections with strong, separate lines. Carolina Herrera, however, positioned her fall collection to feature full head-to-toe looks with stripes. If graphic patterns and bold designs are not normally your style, this may be the time to break out of your mold and create the perfect balance between graphic and minimalistic looks.
