We all have fears, whether they’re slithery snakes, paranormal activity, or simply the ocean. Fear exists for a reason however. From the second we’re born our basic survival instincts take over to let us know when we are in danger and are not safe. Our fears help protect us in these situations and for that reason, are very natural.
Sometimes however, we become fearful not because we are in danger, but because we encounter something that is unfamiliar. These situations can make us feel uncomfortable and keep us from sharing experiences with our friends. For example, if you’re invited to a beach party, but are afraid of the water, you may not be able to fully enjoy yourself and the company of your friends. If you let fear take control, you will be held back from living life to its fullest. Clearly, overcoming fear is difficult otherwise there would’ve been no horror films made!
How can we overcome our fears? The first step in conquering your fears is to understand the forces behind them. Only by understanding those forces will you be able to recognize the difference between fear that protects you from a legitimate danger and fear of that which is merely unfamiliar.
The next step to conquering your fears is to face them. Many of us avoid, or even run, from what we’re are afraid of. But by running we’re actually shrinking emotionally and making ourselves more prone to letting fear control our lives. Instead, we need to ask ourselves, what is it that I am really afraid of? Often, the answer is very simply, the unfamiliar.
You can’t grow by limiting your experiences to that which you are familiar with. You grow through change, by widening your horizons, and trying things that are unfamiliar to you. It’s our perspectives that shape us and make us who we are, and so we don’t want our fears and limitations to define us. By working against your fear you will develop your strengths and show the world what you are truly capable of!
The ability to face your fears is is one of the most important qualities you need to become your most powerful and authentic self. You will start to look at the world in a new light and see all sorts of new possibilities.
For a scorpio like me water is my second home, especially the ocean. When I’m in the ocean I feel calm and lose all sense of time. I can lie on my back and trust the smooth waves will carry me. Sometimes, I let my inner mermaid out and dive under the water so that I can become immersed by the beauty of the sea. At other times I face, head on, the huge, crashing waves and swim against the powerful currents. Despite my love for this biome that takes up 71% of the world, I know many people are afraid of the sea and would never dare swim in it. I understand their fear because the ocean is vast and deep.
Although it’s always good to face your fears, sometimes, the best way to eliminate them is to take things slowly, and gradualy step out of your comfort zone. Rather than diving into the depths of the ocean you could wade in from the shore. Once you get used to the water you’ll gain the experience and courage to face the waves head on with all the power and energy you have.
You need to tell yourself you can face your fears, you can overcome them, you can get past what is holding you back. Remember, it’s never good to hide behind walls or waves. Instead rise to the challenge and push all your fears behind you. Let them get washed up on shore or sucked out into the sea, but not remain inside of you.
